Me, the Other – Online Exhibit

“Otherness” is never one thing.

This collection of portraits and autobiographical statements tells a story of our community where we all share the human experience of being an ‘other’. Individual experiences lead us to a certain set of assumptions and pre-judgements. Yet, the experience of otherness often comes in unexpected places. Some otherness is external; some is internal.

ArtCentral’s impact through two years

ArtCentral: Two Years!

By Elizabeth Freer
Matthews Opera House, ArtCentral Manager

Elizabeth Freer, ArtCentral Mgr.

It seems hard to believe that ArtCentral – the Bush Foundation Community Innovation Grant awarded to The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center in 2016 – has been underway for two years. Good, hard, and important learning and work has taken place and we will continue to see the impacts of these efforts in our community in the coming years.

The grant has supported many projects including Cardboard Chaos; Linking Fences in the summer of 2017, and again in 2018; two sets of Painted Crosswalks; RE:Create – a Creative Community Makerspace; ArtCentral Film Festival: Season One and Season Two, including discussions following each of the eight films, and a photography exhibit; Art of My Life: A Multimedia Celebration of our Creative Soul; this monthly column, and more.

Another ArtCentral Film Festival starts in Sept. 2018! FREE

ArtCentral has announced the ArtCentral Film Festival – Season 2 to be shown at The Matthews in 2018. The films run from September through November, for a total of four movies. The Northern Black Hills Rotary Club again partners with us to help bring this quality series of films to Spearfish. Through this series, we use art as a tool – films in this case – to engage our community on specific topics that are relevant to all members of our community. The four films are free to the public. Three of the movies are listed as NR (not-rated) and one is rated R.

ArtCentral Call for Artists | Linking Fences for 2018

The Matthews and ArtCentral announce the summer of 2018’s community project, “Connecting Our Community Through Linking Fences.” In 2017, three artists created large works on City of Spearfish fences, and a dozen more community groups and individuals worked together to create their own fence projects.

Through this project, we are inviting the community to join us in creating community art projects on the chain link fences throughout Spearfish. We encourage the community to partner with neighbors, friends, organizations, and strangers alike to take part in Linking Fences.
