“Greater Tuna” AUDITIONS coming Feb. 22-23
“Zero Megapixels” Polaroid Exhibit by Roger O’Dea opens Mar. 3
During the month of March, The Matthews will be hosting an original polaroid photography exhibit, “Zero Megapixels,” featuring the work of Roger O’Dea. The show is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m, Tuesdays-Saturdays, Mar. 3-31.
Roger O’Dea is intrigued by the raw imperfection that Polaroid photos offer. He is interested in capturing candid shots of people and places. In an age of editing and airbrush, Roger reminds us of the beautiful imperfections all people possess.
38th Winter Art Show Awards announced
The Matthews Opera House & Art Center has announced the following award recipients for the 38th Winter Art Show. Best of Show was awarded to Tracy Hergert of Lead for her fabric collage titled, “Refuge.” Awards were given during the artist reception on Thursday, Jan. 19. Visitors to the show are encouraged to vote for their favorite art pieces. At the end of the show, the People’s Choice award will be announced-update: announced below. The show continues for public viewing through Jan. 26 during gallery business hours, 10 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday.
“Greater Tuna” brings another great comedy to The Matthews in May, 2017
The Matthews community theater will be the place to be for getting your giggle on.
What do Arles Struvie, Thurston Wheelis, Aunt Pearl, Petey Fisk, Phineas Blye, and Rev. Spikes have in common? In this hilarious send-up of small town morals and mores, they are all among the upstanding citizens of Tuna, Texas’ third smallest town. This concert is the final event in our 2016-17 Subscription Series Season. The play runs May 4-7, 2017. The Thursday-Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday performance is at 2:00 p.m.
The Hillbenders present, “Tommy: A Bluegrass Opry” Jan. 21
“Ever since I was a young boy I played the silver ball…”
Not your standard bluegrass lyric, but it’s a line known by all the world from the biggest rock opera of all time, The Who’s, “Tommy.” “Tommy: A Bluegrass Opry” will be performed at The Matthews, 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for adult subscribers, and $10 for youth (18 and under) and BHSU students. JAS Quintet kicks off the Jazz Sessions 2017 season by Club Matthews
Club Matthews kicks off its inaugural season of Jazz Sessions with a live concert by the JAS Quintet from Sioux Falls, SD. The concert takes place at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Mar. 2, at The Matthews Opera House. This event is the West River album release of “Leap Year Baby.”
Peter Mawanga brings modern African sound to The Matthews, April 20, 2017
Fusing the rock outfit of drums-bass-guitar with the traditional sounds of Malawi’s marimba, thumb piano, and percussion, Peter Mawanga & The Amaravi Movement Afro-vibes is a modern African sound that is intrinsically Malawian. He has the premier band in Malawi, Africa to boot who has been making headlines ever since their debut release “Paphiri ndi Padambo” in 2009.
