More details..
There’s nothing that you can prove if you haven’t got a clue! Clue: The Musical is coming to The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center, February 21 through March 2. This production is based on the classic Clue whodunit board game introduced by Parker Brothers in 1949. Come watch the internationally popular game suspects brought to life on stage as the clues are unveiled to solve the mystery. For this performance, audience members are not merely observing bystanders; they play an active role in the rising action. The audience participates in helping to solve the mystery of who killed Mr. Boddy, with what weapon, and in what room. Every performance will bring something new. This musical is full of comic antics and witty lyrics with a score that is beguiling and carries the investigation from room to room. Full of surprising twists, this performance is appropriate for the whole family.
A word from the directors
Brenna Meyer is the Director for this production. She has acted in and directed community theater for over twenty years. She previously directed Perfect Wedding at The Matthews and was last seen on stage as Peaches in Rex’s Exes in 2013. Meyer commented, “The musical is going to be very, very fun for audiences. A volunteer crew has creatively transformed the opera house stage into the traditional board game layout. There are plot twists and set surprises that has made this show a great experience for our community theatre group.”
The musical direction crew is headed by Musical Director and Stage Manager, Kris Monroe. Recently, he has been involved with the technical aspects of Rex’s Exes and The Woman in Black. His directing debut was last July with The Matthews production of Red. Monroe stated about the musical, “The production is full of solos and duets, lots of musical numbers.” Monroe’s biggest challenge has been in teaching the show music to the cast, all with varying degrees of musical backgrounds and styles. Stephanie Follette is the accompanist for this show and also participates in putting on the annual PB & J (Peanut Butter & Jelly Players) children’s theatre summer production at The Matthews. An accomplished pianist, she says that she is “enjoying this cast and crew and grateful to be part of this show.”
The cast for this play represents a diverse range of the community, from high school talent to BHSU music performance majors to seasoned adult performers. Opera house Executive Director Sian Young stated “Auditions were outstanding for Clue: The Musical. It was a challenge for the show directors to make final casting choices and that’s a real credit to the musical and theatrical talent we have in the Spearfish community. The Clue cast truly represents the heart and soul of good community theatre. We know that our audiences will be impressed with the performances they see on the stage for this show.”
Learn about the CLUE cast
Meyer stated “This is one of the most amazing casts I have worked with. The talent is phenomenal. The age range and the sheer dynamics of the cast are wonderful as well.” The cast is comprised of all of the classic game characters.
- Mrs. White is the maid of the manor and one of the oldest characters. She is played by Hannah Lessly, the youngest cast member in the show.. Lessly is currently a junior at Spearfish High School. She has been in multiple productions at the opera house.
- Another community actor, Kirk Hauck, playing Mr. Boddy, the lord of the manor, attends BHSU pursuing degrees in both psychology and music. He had the opportunity to perform at The Matthews in The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever as a child and is thrilled to be returning for Clue: The Musical.
- The next character, Mrs. Peacock a wealthy widower, is played by Sandi Nauman, a veteran of many productions at The Matthews. Over the River and through the Woods was her last venture on stage.
- Mr. Green, an entrepreneur who loves money, is played by Gerry Bennett. He is a relative newcomer to acting. In the last few years, Gerry played Uncle Aubrey in The Red Velvet Cake War and its sequel, Rex’s Exes.
- The traditional military character, Colonel Mustard, is brought to life by Dwight Myers. In 2003, Myers first got involved with the opera house during the production of M.A.S.H. He was in the most recent community theatre production, The Woman in Black, where he carried the role of multiple acting personas in one character.
- Another cast member, Amy Soriano is playing Ms. Scarlet, a former Las Vegas lounge performer. This is Soriano’s third production at The Matthews.
- The next character, Professor Plum the scholar, is played by Jacob Roman. He performed in The Woman in Black, Red, and last season’s Over the River and Through the Woods.
- Finally, the role of the strictly dedicated detective is played by Hailima Yates. Clue is her first play at The Matthews Opera House. All these actors bring this cast of dynamic characters to life on stage in a stunning and comical murder mystery.
