James Knutson is a retired Art Professor having taught 39 years at Black Hills State University. He began his series painting while in graduate school in Laramie, Wyoming. A strong supporter of The Matthews, Knutson lives in Spearfish with his wife, Paula. Both his wife and son, Michael, are painters and educators.

The work in this show is representative work that James completed in the last few months of 2017.

Flyover Landscapes

James uses many of the same techniques that he has developed over the years. The changes in each series are evident in small adjustments of color, composition, and subject matter. This is a sampling from those works. The use of the camera has made this series possible, using photos from trips in the Black Hills and other parts of the West. James looks for strong lines, both vertical and horizontal, and tries to manipulate the acrylic paint in both directions.
