Jo has enjoyed sculpting since she was a youth. In this series of bronzes, she explores the everyday emotions of women’s experiences. Her faces have always had an ethnic quality to them as she is drawn to the strength and spiritual power of indigenous peoples.
Powell received a degree in Fine Arts and Sociology from Benedictine College in Atchison, KS. She completed an M.A. in Art Education and a PhD in Educational Policy from the University of Illinois. After a 3 year tour of duty with the Army in Germany, she decided to stay and found a job teaching Elementary and Middle School Art for children of the U.S. military in Germany. 26 years later, she retired to Spearfish to be near family. She enjoys the small town sense of community, its arts orientation, and the inspiration gained from living with the beauty of the Bill Hills.
