Julie grew up in Rapid City, SD and went on to attend the University of South Dakota. She has always loved art but discovered an entirely new world in college when she had the chance to study art history and be surrounded by classmates and teachers who were an inspiration to her work.
Julie learned that art can be a conversation between you and the canvas and how to let go and interact with her art in a way she never had before.
She usually starts a work with a found object- a bone or piece of wood. She likes the process of painting something in and then scrubbing it out and the dialogue that starts to take place between you and the work. She also finds inspiration in artists such as Hans Hofmann, Francis Bacon, and Richard Diebenkorn.
Julie now teaches art at Belle Fourche Middle School. She strives to share her passion for art and engage students in the artistic process.
