It will be raining Vincents in Spearfish this November!

Along with the movie screenings of “Loving Vincent” Nov. 17-19, we have put together a fabulous array of “Loving Vincent”-themed activities throughout November until the final moving screening on Nov. 19. All ages will enjoy different creative activities in the art gallery, downtown Spearfish, and Grace Balloch Memorial Library.

Vincent van Gogh Coloring Contest

NOW thru Nov. 14
For ages pre-K to 11 years. Coloring sheets of three different van Gogh paintings will be available at The Matthews Art Gallery, Visit Spearfish, Grace Balloch Memorial Library, and Blackbird Espresso. Finished pieces are to be on view in the art gallery, with a winner in pre-K to Kindergarten and first grade-fifth grade chosen on Nov. 16. Winners receive a copy of The Matthews’ children’s book “Shakespeare and the Crown Jewel – A Story of The Matthews Opera House.”

 

 

Vincent van Gogh Scavenger Hunt

Nov. 1-14
For all ages. Find Vincent van Gogh paper figurines and fun facts about the painter throughout downtown Spearfish businesses. Participants need to gather all the facts in provided scavenger hunt booklets. Booklets are available in the art gallery by Nov. 1. Once completed, their names will be entered into a drawing for a free ticket to the movie, Loving Vincent.

Spearfish High School Painting Raffle

NOW thru Nov. 19
To celebrate another post-impressionist artist, Lisa Howard’s high school art class recreated Leo Gausson’s 1899 painting Landscape with Red Tree and donated it back to The Matthews. It will be on display in the art gallery and opera house lobby during movie nights where raffle tickets are on sale. They are $1 each or six tickets for $5. The winner’s name will be drawn following the final screening of Loving Vincent’s 2 p.m. screening on Sunday, Nov. 19.

 

 

Crow Peak ala van Gogh-style Painting Class

Nov. 10, 6-9 p.m.
Ages 16 and up. In the art gallery, artist Jayne Rose will be instructing an intermediate acrylic painting class. She will instruct participants to paint a landscape of Crow Peak in the Post-Impressionist style similar to Vincent van Gogh. Canvases are supplied. A painting supply list will be published for the class. This class is $65 per person with limited availability. Deadline for registration is Tuesday, Nov. 7. Vincent van Gogh activities at Grace Balloch Memorial Library

Art Saturday Story Time
November 4 – Saturday, 10 a.m.
For ages Pre-K and Early Elementary. How messy and artistic can kids get? Join the Library in a Saturday morning art-themed story time, followed by some Van Gogh-style painting.

Lego Club Meets Masterpiece Art
November 8 – Wednesday, 3:30-5 p.m.
The monthly Lego Club is for kids ages 8-12. The once-monthly Lego Club is going to get artistic. Members will recreate famous Van Gogh art works using Lego building bricks.

We Van “GOT” Art
November 15 – Thursday, 3:30-5 p.m.
Minimum age of 10. Tween Activity. Whether you have artistic talent or not, tweens are welcome to join the library in an afternoon of painting. Join us as we recreate some of Vincent Van Gogh’s famous masterpieces.

ART FOR ALL AGES
November 18 – Saturday, 9 a.m.-Noon
Everyone is invited to participate in this Van Gogh inspired art activity at the library. Stop in and create your own masterpiece. Supplies are provided. Young children must be supervised and may require assistance.
