It’s all about cowboys.
The Matthews announces a night of cowboy melodies and rhythms at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 20. The show, Smokin’ Campfire Concerto, features three well-known Black Hills musicians: Paul Larson, Kenny Putnam, and Boyd Bristow. Tickets for the show are $20 adults and $10 youth (18 and under).
The concert will have two 45 minute sets with one intermission.
According to Boyd Bristow of Red Willow fame, “There’s a wonderful trove of cowboy tunes out there. We’ll be doing quite a few of those, along with some western swing, ala Bob Wills, and the Texas Playboys.”
“There’s a lot of rather poetic language in cowboy tunes and it illustrates an era that is almost gone. But, it’s still strong in many ways — rather romantic in that sense,” continues Bristow.
The show will have plenty of flowing fiddle and guitar licks backing up baritone Paul Larson’s vocals.
About the Musicians
Paul Larson makes his home in the sacred Black Hills of South Dakota, just a bit outside the small community of Rochford. In March 2016, Larson received the coveted Golden Harmonica Award. He’s spent many years competing in and judging rodeos throughout the Midwest. Paul is a talented carpenter, and his music remains true to authentic cowboy music. Known for his baritone voice and cowboy yodel, he was once introduced by an announcer as a man with the voice he’d hire to ride circles around a rangy herd of cows to keep them quiet through the evening.
Well-known musician, Kenny Putnam, has a long career as a member of the Red Willow Band, A South Dakota Acoustic Christmas, as a Grammy nominee and winner, and as a member of the Roy Clark Show. Putnam toured internationally with Clark. Kenny appeared on the Tonight Show and many other programs and as a regular on Hee Haw. He is in the SD Country Music Hall of Fame, The SD Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the SD Traditional Music Hall of Fame.
Singer/songwriter,Boyd Bristow, is a long-time member of A South Dakota Acoustic Christmas. Bristow is a veteran musician that has played with many prestigious groups such as Blueberry Buckle, Poker Alice, Kenny Putnam and the Song Pilots, East of Westreville, and Vince Two Eagles. He traveled across the US and in Europe while performing. Besides being a star instrumentalist and composer, Boyd is a terrific singer and responsible for the recording and production on many CD recordings. He has a CD recording called “Cloudless Sky” on the Maxine/Audiophile record label.
