This series of paintings, the “yellow cloth series,”  is tied together with the cloth and background wall. Variety was achieved by varying the bone, antlers, fruit, and other fabrics. One of the motivating ideas in this series and many of Sue’s still life paintings are the combination of brightly colored fruit and bleached bones. In some ways this juxtaposition is a metaphor for life – are you living life to the fullest or withering away in silent despair?  Personally, it is also a representation of Sue’s faith.

The collection Will Lopez has developed for the past six years incorporates a technique he calls “chip away.” When creating ceramics, the artist pushes the limits of the clay, applying pressure at a specific time, and allowing new forms to arise, with the goal of designing something delicate, structurally sound, and seemingly perfect.

ArtCentral: This is how we RE:Create!

Over 550 people in our community have gathered over the last three weeks in RE:Create – our creative community makerspace in The Matthews Art Gallery. People have come in and discovered the magic that happens when we share our time, talents, resources, and knowledge with our community.This winter is an exciting time to be in Spearfish!

ArtCentral Film Festival: Season One is underway, co-hosted by Northern Hills Rotary Club. The second film titled “Waste Land” is on February 20th at 6:30 pm (free), at The Matthews Opera House.

39th Winter Art Show winners announced

 

The Matthews Opera House & Art Center has announced the following award recipients for the 39th Winter Art Show. Best of Show was awarded to Dede Farrar of Rapid City for her acrylic painting titled, “Deerfield Trail in Autumn.” Awards were given during the artist reception on Thursday, Jan. 18. Visitors to the show are encouraged to vote for their favorite art pieces. At the end of the show, the People’s Choice award will be announced on Jan. 25, 2018. The show continues for public viewing through Jan. 25 during gallery business hours, 10 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday. UPDATE: Jerry Ainsworth of Spearfish is our People’s Choice award winner.
