The Matthews hosts first Detective Cosplay Night on Feb. 12

Cosplayers unite and show-off your favorite detective character costumes. Well, detective costumes are preferred, but if you have a favorite outfit for cosplay, by all means…wear it!  

The Matthews Opera House and Art Center is hosting a Detective Cosplay Game Night, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12, in the opera house. This event is part of The Big Read Spearfish and is free and open to anyone age 15 and up.

February is Film Noir month at BHSU

Black Hills State University (BHSU) continues The Big Read celebration of Dashiell Hammett’s, “The Maltese Falcon,” by hosting their American film noir series, Feb. 4, 11, and 25, Thursdays, at 6:30 p.m. each evening. The film series is free and open to the public.

They will be held at BHSU, 1200 University St., Spearfish, in the Jonas Science Building, room 305.

The Big Read Scavenger Hunt winners announced

The Junk Drawer really got into it with costumes!

Saturday, Jan. 9 was a good day.  That was the day that we kicked off The Big Read Spearfish.  The weather forecast for the day was for single digits.  A low turnout was a real issue.  Luckily, even though it only got up to 15 degrees, the sun was shining and there was no wind!  Read on for the answers to the scavenger hunt and winners (pictures too)!

Wham! Pow! Graphic Novel Art Exhibit slated for Feb. 5-26

The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center continues its Big Read celebration of “The Maltese Falcon” by Dashiell Hammett with an exhibit celebrating Graphic Novel Art. The exhibit will present the work of five Black Hills fiber artists.

The opening reception will be held 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, Feb. 5 in the art gallery. This show continues to run from until Feb. 26 in the art gallery 10:00-5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The event is free and open to the public.
