The Big Read

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read is managed by Arts Midwest.  SPEARFISH is one of 77 communities nationwide participating in The Big Read from September 2013-June 2014. From September 2013-May 2014 our community will celebrate “The Namesake” with a full calendar of events.

April 7-26, 2014
Mondays through Saturdays 10:00am – 5:00pm

The Colors of India: Traditional Sari Exhibit
Location:  The Matthews Art Gallery, 612 N. Main St., Spearfish, SD 57783
From April 7-26 the Matthews Art Gallery will host an exhibit of Indian saris; the traditional female clothing from India. Mannikins will display customary dress and also the art and skill displayed within the fabrics of India. OPEN BUSINESS HOURS: Mon. – Saturdays, 10 am to 5pm.  Opening Night Reception The kick off for this exhibit will be on April 11, from 5:00pm – 7:00pm. Refreshments and cash bar will be available. This entire event is free and open to the public during gallery hours.

Community Art Project – Strutting like Peacocks
Location:  The Matthews Art Gallery, 612 N. Main St., Spearfish, SD 57783
Each month a community art project featuring some aspect of Indian art, family immigration stories, or reading, is being offered.  All supplies are provided.  This month’s project will be creating beautiful peacocks, the national bird of India. Ages dependent on the project offered.

Bellman Brown Bag Lecture
Location:  The Matthews Opera House, 612 N. Main St., Spearfish, SD 57783
Current issues in immigration and the immigration process will be discussed by a local immigration attorney.  The Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas, history, literature, art and culture.  Programs are presented on the second Wednesday of each month, noon to 1:00 p.m.  Designed to begin and end within each lunch hour, patrons are invited to bring their lunch, if desired, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.

Ashwin Batish School Residency
Location:  Creekside Elementary, Spearfish Middle School, Spearfish, SD 57783-2445
Ashwin Batish and his band will perform in the Spearfish public school.  They will also be in the classrooms explaining the origins of their instruments and Indian music.

Ashwin Batish Ensemble Concert
Location:  The Matthews Opera House, 612 N. Main St., Spearfish, SD 57783
The Ashwin Batish Ensemble is a world beat raga fusion band that features the sitar, a classical Indian musical instrument, as the central focus.  Mr. Batish is an extraordinary sitarist and tabla player.  His pioneering efforts in world beat music have earned him critical reviews and great respect in the music community.  Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for youth and BHSU students.

Community Art Project – India-style Christmas Ornaments
Location:  The Matthews Art Gallery, 612 N. Main St., Spearfish, SD 57783
Each month a community art project featuring some aspect of Indian art, family immigration stories, or reading, is being offered.  All supplies are provided. For November,  we will be creating India themed Christmas ornaments.  The ornaments will go on a Christmas tree we are decorating for this year’s Zonta fundraiser.  All Ages.

Community Art Project – Mehndi Art Gloves
Location:  The Matthews Art Gallery, 612 N. Main St., Spearfish, SD 57783
Each month a community art project featuring some aspect of Indian art, family immigration stories, or reading, is being offered.  All supplies are provided. Originating in ancient India, Mehndi is the artistic application of designs to the hands and feet. Participants can enjoy the practice of Mehndi without staining their skin by creating radial designs in marker while wearing a glove.  This month’s art event is recommended for ages 12 and up!

Over Land & Sea: Spearfish Immigration Stories Exhibit
Location:  The Matthews Art Gallery, 612 N. Main Street, Spearfish, SD 57783
A new exhibit called “Over Land & Sea: Spearfish Immigration Stories,” will be unveiled during an opening night reception in The Matthews Art Gallery on Friday, February 7, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The reception will feature many of the Spearfish citizens who participated in this exhibit. Their framed photos and personal immigration experiences will be on the gallery walls. It is free and open to the public. The exhibition will continue through Saturday, February 22 during normal art gallery hours — Tuesday through Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
