The Executive Director is a full-time, salaried position requiring flexibility in scheduling including evening and weekend hours.


The Executive Director is responsible for the administration of the MOH. The Executive Director reports to a volunteer Board of Directors, and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission, programmatic and financial objectives, as well as its adherence to its core values. 

This is a full time, exempt position, with a healthcare reimbursement account, paid time off and holidays. 


The Executive Director will be thoroughly committed to The Matthews’ mission. All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include: 

  • Track record of effectively leading a performance and outcome based organization and staff. 
  • Ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth. 
  • Unwavering commitment to high quality programs and data-driven program evaluation. 
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget. 
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships. 
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills. 
  • Proven success in researching and apply for grants in addition to maintaining the required reporting to funding sources on the status of projects and the appropriation and use of funds 
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning. 
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people and community entities. 
  • Passion, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed. 

Experience & Education

A combination of experience and education are required, providing the required knowledge and skill sets to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. 

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four year college or university with an emphasis in the area of not-for-profit management, administration, the arts, design or other related field is preferred, but not required 
  • Significant full-time, successful, paid work experience in not-for-profit management and fundraising, arts, events management, education and community engagement is required 
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with colleagues, volunteers, instructors of the arts, and community entities at every level. 

Position Duties and Responsibilities

In administration, the Executive Director will: 

  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors and seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for ongoing operations. 
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of each standing Board committee 
  • Jointly with the Board of Directors, assure that the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress. 
  • Assure that the organization has a short-term business plan that promotes the operation of the theater and arts center in relation to the current external and internal environments of the organization. 
  • Provide leadership in the development of policies and programs, organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors and/or staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the board. 
  • Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization’s work. 
  • Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. 
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field of not-for-profit leadership, management and fund development. 

In program development, the Executive Director will: 

  • Work to promote and create innovative program services and practices that fulfill the Matthews mission, purpose, vision and strategic focus. 
  • Work to ensure high quality programs and customer satisfaction. 
  • Promote staff leadership and involvement in program planning, development, and evaluation and quality assurance efforts. 
  • Seek opportunities to serve additional constituents in the community. 
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the fields of arts education, museums, and multi-disciplinary community arts programs. 

In communications, the Executive Director will: 

  • See that the board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and important factors influencing it. 
  • Publicize and raise community awareness of the activities of the organization, its programs, goals, mission and the needs of its users. 
  • Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations. 
  • Serve as an ambassador and advocate by representing the organization and its perspective to agencies, organizations, and the general public. 
  • Assure promotion of the organization and needs of its users through hosting of fund-raising events and social media. 

In relations with staff, the Executive Director will: 

  • Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers. 
  • Assure that job descriptions are developed; that orientation, training, and on-going evaluation of performance are provided; that improvement plans are developed as needed; and that sound human resource practices are in place and followed. 
  • See that an effective team, with appropriate provision for succession/promotion, is in place. 
  • Encourage staff and volunteer development and education, and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization. 
  • Maintain a culture that attracts, motivates and keeps a diverse staff of energetic, enthusiastic and top quality people. 

In budget and finance, the Executive Director will: 

  • Assure that the organization establishes and maintains sound financial practices. 
  • Provide oversight of financial/fiscal functions of organization. 
  • Work with the bookkeeper, treasurer, and the Board in preparing a budget; see that the organization operates within budgetary guidelines. 
  • Work with the Board of Directors to ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work, through donor identification and cultivation, fund-raising events, grant-writing, and other opportunities. 
  • Conduct official correspondence of the organization and execute legal documents as authorized by the Board of Directors. 

Individual must believe in the value of the arts in the Spearfish community and the importance of the Matthews Opera House as a cornerstone of community life. Individual must be high energy, outgoing, and comfortable conversing with a broad range of artists, patrons, business leaders and community visitors about all aspects of the arts center and its operations. Must have a mature demeanor and represent the arts center in a professional manner. Good writing, spelling, budgeting, and organizational skills are required. Must also have a creative spirit and enjoy the arts! 

Licenses/Other Requirements

  • Full access to a vehicle and ability to work flexible hours to fulfill responsibilities of position. 
  • Valid driver’s license, clean DMV record and updated proof of insurance to work. 
  • Clear criminal background screening and positive credit report.

Physical Requirements

Individual must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, be comfortable climbing ladders to hang art and change light bulbs, be able to access and hang the front display windows, negotiate basement stairs, and stand/walk for an extended period of time outside in the City Park.
