NEA Big Read: Spearfish is in full swing! Have you picked up your FREE copy of A Wizard of Earthsea yet? If not, we still have plenty of novels available. Stop by the gallery to take yours home!

On these first few episodes of The Matthews Opera House Podcast, staff members will be breaking down the novel and going over the major themes of the book chapter by chapter. This month we have a ton of events celebrating our NEA Big Read! We’re kicking off the month with our Fantasy Film Festival and will have films running every other week.
Our Fantasy Art Show opens this week, and make sure to make reservations for our first Sip N’ Paint which will be based on the themes of Earthsea.
Our Bellman Brown Bag Series returns with a special presentation from the Black Hills Raptor Center. It will be at a special time (7 pm), so make note of that!
The virtual children’s theatre production of “Mirror Mirror” is just a couple of weeks away. This will take place entirely online and will be a fun show for the whole family to watch from home.
Finally, we will wrap up the month with two awesome craft opportunities: a Dragon Pendant Workshop and a free Mythical Creativity Kit!

Fantasy Film Festival

All throughout the month of March, the Matthews will be showing films as part of our NEA Big Read Fantasy Film Festival! Films for the month include:

Fantasy Art Show
March 5 – 27
During the month of March, the Matthews Opera House & Arts Center gallery will be featuring commissioned work from local artists that all celebrate the magic and beauty of Ursula K. Le Guin’s world of Earthsea.
There will also be informational displays about the book, its symbolism, and the author.

Sip n’ Paint

The Spearfish Chamber Hook YP and Matthews Opera House invite you for a night of wine and painting for our very first sip n’ paint using themes from A Wizard of Earthsea. Our guest artist for the evening will be local artist, Aaron Otterness.

Bellman Brown Bag: Birds of Prey
March 10 | 7 pm
March’s Bellman Brown Bag program will be on March 10th and feature a special guest from the Black Hills Raptor Center to discuss birds of prey in the Black Hills and how they compare to the birds mentioned in “A Wizard of Earthsea.”
This presentation is free to the public and will take place in the Matthews Opera House theatre. Masks are required.
Mirror Mirror: A Virtual Fractured Fairy Tale
March 12 | 7 pm
Cost: $5 to access link to virtual performance.
The Froelich Young Actors Guild and the Matthews Opera House are excited to present the virtual youth theater production of “Mirror Mirror: A Virtual Fractured Fairytale.”
This production will take place entirely online. A link to the performance can be purchased for $5.
Fantasy Craft Workshop: Dragon Eye Pendant
March 18 | 4 pm

During the NEA Big Read, the Matthews Opera House & Arts Center will be doing three in-person fantasy craft days hosted by our very own gallery manager, Heather Evans.
On March 18 from 4-6 pm, we will be learning how to make your own dragon eye pendant!

Mythical Creativity Kit
March 27 | 10 am – 5 pm
Make something magical! This will be the second of three FREE craft kits that will be available during the NEA Big Read. Come pick up your kit at the gallery and finish it in the safety of your home.
More details about the individual crafts will be released closer to the pickup date.
