Matthews announce Bad Movie Night fundraiser for the holidays

December 2, 2021

Historic opera house will show “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians”

For their most recent fundraiser, the Matthews Opera House is asking Spearfish residents to watch a bad movie to support a great cause. On Saturday, December 11, the Matthews will be hosting a Bad Movie Night Holiday Pajama Party featuring the cult classic film “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.” The event starts at 7:00 pm in the opera house theater. Tickets are $10 and include the price of popcorn.

“We really want this to be a fun evening appreciating film that so often is underappreciated,” said Darren Granaas, executive director at the Matthews. “Bad movies definitely have their place in cinematic history and they can often be the most fun to watch!”

Granaas said the Matthews is encouraging all moviegoers to wear their PJs and to bring their comfy blankets and pillows. The evening will include fun commentary by a group calling themselves the “Mystery Santa Theater” elves, a spoof on “Mystery Science Theater.”

“And in addition to free popcorn, we will also have pizza, beer, wine, and other beverages available for purchase at the event,” Granaas added.

The Matthews is holding this event as an end of the year fundraiser to help raise money for the new year. All ticket, drink, and food purchases made will support the Matthews Opera House and its upcoming programming.

Tickets are available online at or can be purchased by calling the Matthews’ gallery at 605.642.7973. Tickets can also be purchased in the gallery at 612 N Main St. in downtown Spearfish. Operating hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm.
