Education and Programs

The arts are for everyone and everyone is an artist.

As the cultural hub of Spearfish, the Matthews creates outstanding arts collaborations and experiences in our community.

Bringing the world to our classrooms

Artistic experiences foster learning and growth. World-renowned entertainers from our music and theater performance series visit local schools to share their talents and interact with community groups during Q&A sessions. More than a decade since it first began at the Matthews, the Froelich Young Actors Guild continues to inspire youth thespians every summer.

Expanding equity and access in arts opportunities

Creativity through the arts can cultivate sustainable answers to community needs. Residences for artists to work with the Canyon Hills Center, a residential youth psychiatric facility, and the Northern Hills Training Center, supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, are examples of the Matthews’ outreach to expand access to and participation in diverse arts programming.

Collaborating to impact the cultural lives of our citizens

The arts are the perfect mechanism for building connectedness and presenting new ideas. The Matthews provides leadership and planning oversight for community-wide programs like the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read. Community art projects including Linking Fences and the Spearfish Songbook series show how the Matthews cultivates connection inside the walls of its historic building and beyond.
