The Matthews creates meaningful artistic experiences for area youth to engage their imaginations, increase critical thinking skills, and foster emotional intelligence.
Children’s Theater

Nearly 50 students in grades 2-12 experience the passion of theatre each summer through the Matthews’ free children’s theater program, the Froelich Young Actors Guild. Split into two age groups, children practice, prepare, and perform in two culminating productions. From acting to costumes to set construction, children experience every facet of theater while spending several weeks inside the historic Matthews Opera House.
Artists in Schools

Local schools benefit from artists who perform at the Matthews. Contracted artists visit area schools to perform their craft and provide interactive workshops for students. For many children, this is the first time they have experienced a professional, creative performance live and in-person. When the Matthews brings the world to our historic stage and to our classrooms, we also bring along opportunities for education and discussion on a whole new and creative level.
Free Art Activities

The Matthews encourages children to create and engage their imagination through several free art activities throughout the year. During the Matthews’ Festival in the Park, children are invited to design, touch, and engage with art from painting, to experimenting with musical instruments, to crafting through games and play. During the Spearfish Downtown Business Association’s Fall Festival, throughout the Christmas season, and during the summer the Matthews provides free children’s arts and crafts.
Young Artist Formation

Making space and making a place for young people who want to learn and grow their artistic talents is a core value for the Matthews. Whether its through collaborations with Spearfish High School, or encouraging Spearfish youth to enter our Community Art Show, the Matthews is dedicated to young artists.
