Collage: The Art of World-Invention

Spearfish artist (of collage, sculpture, illustration), Jo Powell, uses the RE:Create theme of found art with a workshop all about collage. This is a FREE event presented by ArtCentral Spearfish. All materials are included. Recommended for ages 15 and up. Younger children may attend but must be accompanied by an adult.

Details about this workshop
One of the most interesting things about collage is that it doesn’t have to follow real-world rules.

Collage allows the artist to invent new worlds. Worlds where there is no gravity, where water flows through the desert, or where children are in charge. In this project, images from magazines or from old tintypes will be put together to create a sense of a story in pictures. Come join Jo Powell in making a collage and explore new worlds.

The workshop takes place in the ArtCentral RE:create makerspace in The Matthews’ art gallery.

Sign-up is preferred

Even though the workshop is free, sign-up would be preferred in order for the instructor to be prepared with the correct amount of materials and supplies. Either call the art gallery at 605.642.7973 ext.0 — OR email [email protected] to add your name to the class list. If emailing, be sure to provide a phone number.

About Jo Powell

“Art is an expression. We express what and how we see or feel. Anyone can make art because everyone has feelings and can perceive.” — Jo Powell

This is a firm belief of the local artist, Jo Powell. She taught art for 25 years for the American school system overseas in Germany and then retired to the Black Hills where she continues to explore art in its many forms.

Jo Powell received a degree in Fine Arts and Sociology from Benedictine College in Atchison, KS. She completed an M.A. in Art Education and a PhD in Educational Policy from the University of Illinois. After a 3 year tour of duty with the Army in Germany, she decided to stay and found a job teaching Elementary and Middle School Art for children of the U.S. military in Germany. 26 years later, she retired to Spearfish to be near family. She enjoys the small town sense of community, its arts orientation, and the inspiration gained from living with the beauty of the Bill Hills.
