ArtCentral: Celebrating our Community with Art

Have you noticed some of the cool things happening in town? ArtCentral has a couple of projects that are underway and it has been great to see the community get engaged, to hear the positive feedback, and to see Spearfish get excited about art in our community.

If you haven’t seen the painted crosswalks yet, ArtCentral recently painted artistic designs on the crosswalks at Grant and Canyon Streets. For three days, community volunteers and members of the ArtCentral committee worked to install semi-permanent art on the pavement. The community support for the project has been outstanding. Watch the Matthews Opera House Facebook page for updates on the next crosswalk painting project.

“It Takes A Village.” ArtCentral thanks businesses for their support.

They say, “It takes a village.”

The village of the northern Black Hills is kind and generous indeed. Many companies and organizations are living up to that quote and ArtCentral wants to recognize them. This list will be added to as more “villagers” come on board.

Thank you.

ArtCentral is diving right in with exploring the creativity in our community. We are busy installing Linking Fences projects and preparing to paint a few crosswalks in town as well this summer.

We are excited to announce the selection of three artists through our Linking Fences “Call for Community Artists” process. Each artist will install artwork on Spearfish fences. Look forward to seeing more of our local artists work in our community this summer!

May 2017: Exploring Ideas of Creativity

ArtCentral is Exploring ideas for Creativity

By Elizabeth Freer

Do you think you are a creative person? Were you creative as a child? Have you ever built something without following directions? Improvised and found a solution? Fixed a computer or piece of equipment? Made up a joke? Explained a difficult concept to a child? Mowed the lawn this week in a different pattern than last week? Each requires creativity.

Creativity is not owned by artists, magicians or scientists; it belongs to all of us. My creativity and your creativity are so different that they possibly cannot be compared.
