Join us as we celebrate a select few artists who have previously exhibited in the gallery and are outstanding members of the community. Each of these artists brings a unique perspective in visualizing the beautiful area we call home. After the opening reception stick around for a great night of music in partnership with Spread the Tunes, The “JAM-uary” music series, brings live music in the dead of winter! The best regional music with local beer and food to warm your spirits through the coldest nights of the year.
Artists of The Black Hills

Artists of the Black Hills was founded in 2005 as an organization of professional artists, artisans, and galleries with a common goal of establishing the Black Hills region as a prime source for art of the highest quality. Artists of the Black Hills works with regional arts organizations, state agencies, and commercial entities to foster greater growth and appreciation of the Black Hills as an art center. The Matthews is looking forward to hosting this amazing group!
Summer Art Series

- Exhibit Closes: September 6th
This showcase features the talents of Black Hills artists with an incredible display of high-quality original pieces on exhibit. The Summer Art Series is structured to support the local artistic community with pieces displayed in the gallery ready to sell and take home the same day. Artists in the Black Hills area of South Dakota/Wyoming are juried into this exhibit and as work sells artists provide a replacement to create a unique evolving exhibit. Applications are made available to artists March 25 – April 19.
Community Art Show

The Matthews Opera House and Art Center is excited to announce its 45th Annual Community Art Show. Once again, we will be opening our doors to artists of all ages and abilities, from amateur to professional, to exhibit their work. This exhibit is an astounding display of the talent in the Northern Hills across all walks of life and mediums. The 44th Community Art Show had 186 pieces from 102 artists! As a space for immersive creative education, the fine arts programs at BHSU are exploding with imagination, energy, and talent and we are so grateful to be able to host them in the gallery. Students of all levels look forward to this annual exhibit as a way to showcase their work in a professional arts venue. The quality of work reflects the dedication, innovation, and attention to detail that represents the creative student community at Black Hills State University. Also included in the mix, this exhibit is sprinkled with the work of faculty and staff as a way to offer our community the whole picture of the arts at BHSU.
